Spilman Farming

Yorkshire Post

Spilmans Asparagus: Spilmans grow our asparagus on Lodge Farm in Helperby, York, using three acres for three different varieties of asparagus.

Everything is done by hand; planting the crowns, harvesting the spears and then grading and packing them. They are very appreciative of our hard working staff, who are usually Polish, and with local help too. The staff never seem phased whether there is a mountain of asparagus or relatively small amount to deal with. Asparagus responds dramatically to higher temperatures - on a hot day you can almost see it growing as you walk down the rows. On a cold day it doesn't seem to move.

Spilmans Soft Fruits: They have been growing strawberries at Church Farm, Sessay, since 1970, starting off with 2 acres, and gradually increasing to the present 12 acres. 1 acre of raspberries was planted in 1990, and this area has now increased to 3 acres. Alongside these fruits are also blackcurrants, redcurrants, gooseberries and plums.

Over the years, new varieties of strawberries have been developed, a selection has been grown in order to extend the season and to produce quality fruit throughout June and July. Rosie, Christine, Korona, Symphony and Florence are amongst the strawberry varieties grown. The raspberry varieties are Glen Moy, Glen Ample, and Tulameen, which have done well for the garm ~ each variety shows its own characteristics and flavour.

Herb Fed Poultry

Yorkshire Post

Edward Wilkinson qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and after 2 years in London came home as a result of the credit crunch. With a family background in agriculture, Edward wanted to develop a food business in his home county of North Yorkshire. He approached his farming friend with the idea of rearing turkeys for Christmas as it was apparent there were few quality producers in the area.

At the same time Edward’s Aunt, Alison Dodd Managing director of Sandhutton Growers was feeding her chickens at home on fresh herbs. She gave any surplus eggs to her friends and neighbours and they were often praised as the best they had ever eaten.

Edward thought that if these herbs were having such an impact on an egg then what about a turkey, a bird that in the past has gained a reputation for being dry and tasteless.

In July 2009 Edward took delivery of a trial batch of 500 bronze turkeys with a view to feeding them on fresh herbs to try and create a bird with flavour and a difference.
The results were fantastic, the turkeys were moist, tasted delicious and the feedback was terrific.

Herb Fed Ltd was founded in March 2010 to carry the idea forward and feed fresh herbs to bronze turkeys, free range chickens and ducks, marketing them under a single brand; Herb Fed.

Black Sheep Brewery

Yorkshire Post

It is almost impossible to believe that The Black Sheep Brewery is only 18 years old, In fact it was in October 1992 when Black Sheep beers first made an appearance in pubs in and around the Yorkshire Dales. The delivery of the first casks of beer all those years ago began a new era for Paul Theakston, whose family has brewed in Masham for six generations.

Timothy Taylors

Yorkshire Post

This company is passionate about upholding the traditions of the English pub, "Taylor's Taste" is achieved by using only the finest natural ingredients, taking pride in the brewing process and allowing full time for the ales to ferment and mature, thereby creating a unique family of beers. The superb spring water that wells up from deep under the Pennines is still used today to produce the country's best traditional cask ales.

The brewery remains in the Taylor family and is now the last independent brewery of its type left in West Yorkshire. This independence enables Taylors to survive as one of the few brewers still brewing true cask ales in the same way it has always done.
